Julie Gold will headline this year’s Humanity in Harmony Concert and lead a songwriting workshop on Saturday at the Flint Institute of Music. Julie is a New York Songwriter and singer best known for Bette Midler’s version of her song FROM A DISTANCE which won the Grammy for Song of the Year in 1991.
That song has been played on radio over 4 million times: was read into the Congressional Record by Sen. Barbara Boxer, was recorded internationally and translated into many languages, it was illustrated as a Children’s Book, mass- produced in Music Boxes, quoted in greeting cards and used to wake-up astronauts in the Mir Space Station the very first time the Americans hooked up with the Russians in outer space.
Now that’s a song with impact.
Her songs have been recorded by artists from Jewel and Cliff Richard to Judy Collins, The Byrds, Donna Summer, Nanci Griffith, Patti LaBelle and Patti LuPone.
One of her favorite songs, DREAM LOUD was used by the Girls Scouts of America. She loves to tell how she was paid for the use of her song in Girl Scout Cookies. She is currently writing songs for the Oxford University Press that will help teach English to elementary school children all over the world.
Julie Gold has appeared on; the Grammy Awards , Austin City Limits, CBS This Morning, TNN – American Music Shop, PBS and Good Morning America.
She will lead one of three workshops at the Flint Institute of Music on Saturday October 17. Julie will give songwriting tips and direction at 2:30 at the “Julie Gold Songwriting Workshop”. The first workshop, at 11AM is “Resolving Differences through Communication,” a conflict resolution workshop led by the Flint Area Conflict Resolution Center. The second, at 1PM, is “A Lesson in the Blues” a hands on blues guitar lesson from the Reverend Robert Jones, a blues artist and educator.
