The Eleventh Annual Humanity in Harmony Music Festival’s signature concert is scheduled to take place at 7:30 pm on Saturday, October 21, 2023 at the MacArthur Recital Hall located at the Flint Institute of Music (FIM). It features four acts with an eclectic mix of styles and culture.
To kick off the 11th season the festival will feature another all-American, home-grown style of music, Dixieland! The North Oakland Dixieland Band specializes in the traditional sound of Dixie and both “Traditional Jazz” and Swing music from the years 1900 to 1960.
Dixieland jazz, is also called traditional jazz, hot jazz, or simply Dixieland. It’s a style of jazz based on the music that developed in New Orleans at the start of the 20th century with artists like Jelly Roll Morton and the remarkable Louis Armstrong.
The Humanity in Harmony Concert will also feature the remarkable Dort Honors String Quartet along with students from the Flint School of the performing arts who have traveled the world performing, will lead off the show for the eleventh year, and We Are The Northern Lights, a pop rock duo from New York will also be performing.
The North Oakland Dixieland Band is composed of a four horn front line with clarinet, cornet, tenor sax and trombone and our rhythm section with piano, tuba, banjo, guitar and drums. This combination, plus the musician’s ability to play more than one instrument lets the band perform many styles of music and vocals from the Traditional Jazz era.
The Dixieland Band is conducting a Master Class in the Anderson Room at the FIM on Thursday, October 19th at 4:00 pm and this event is free and open to the public. The band will also give a Music Around Town Concert at 7:00 pm on October 19th followed by a “Meet and Greet” with band members. This event is also free and open to the public.
